Generous gesture: A mystery man stunned shoppers in a Devonshire supermarket when handed out wads of £50 notes with this note attached

Shoppers were left stunned when a mystery man handed out wads of £50 notes to strangers in a supermarket.
The man slotted unmarked envelopes containing cash into people's baskets as he sped through the crowded aisles of a Tesco in Tilverton, Devon, shortly before Christmas.
It was only once the grey-haired benefactor, whose identity is unknown, had made his getaway that the unsuspecting shoppers discovered the envelopes contained cash.

Each festive bonus was accompanied by a typed letter emblazoned with the greeting ‘Happy Christmas'.
A personal message underneath read: 'I have recently been fortunate enough to have come into quite a lot of money - more than I need for myself and my family.
'So I thought that I would share some of it with other people - the £50 enclosed is for you. I hope this enables you to have a little extra cheer this Christmas.

'You do not have to do anything other than spend the money - and it is real, there is no trick, no hidden cameras or catch. Just have a happy Christmas.'
Shocked shoppers thought they had fallen foul of a practical joke, with one elderly couple from Sampford Peverell even taking the note to a bank to get it authenticated.
The pair, who wish to remain anonymous, said the man had a backpack stuffed with envelopes that he handed out at random as he hurried through the crowded aisles.

Speaking on Wednesday he said: 'I wasn't on duty at the time but when I came in today several staff mentioned it.
'They said a mystery man had been handing out cash and some were joking they wished he'd handed some to them.
'Nobody seems to know a lot about who it was but several customers seem to have mentioned him handing out envelopes.
'Nobody was upset and everyone seemed happy about it. I don't know why he would do it but if it's what it appears to be it's a very generous thing to do.'
