Even for a man as extravagant as Elton John, last year’s Christmas gift topped them all. Exactly one year ago saw the birth (thanks to a surrogate mother) of his son Zachary.

Back then, Elton and his partner David Furnish told the world ‘we are overwhelmed with happiness and joy’ and the feeling clearly hasn’t dimmed, as Zachary has followed his besotted parents on a veritable world tour.

Here, David Thomas imagines his diary of a very eventful year...



I'm Elton's baby, so of course I've got outrageously cool specs. I need them too. It's not the Hawaiian sun that's dazzling me, it's Papa David's wild swimming trunks



It's springtime in New York and Papa David¿s taking me for a walk in my stroller. What are we up to today? Shopping, lunch, more mwaah mwaah kissies? Whatever, just wake me up when we get there...



My dads are having lots of fun with TV presenter Barbara Walters at our home in Manhattan. But if she keeps patting my back like that, don¿t blame me if I add some accessories of my own to that expensive blouse of hers



My nanny¿s pushing me round Central Park (right) to look at the Spring blossom. Forgive me for looking bored, but I live with a man who once spent £290,000 on flowers in a year



Daddy Elton¿s arrived at Venice airport in his leopard-print shoes and Papa David¿s got a snazzy silk hanky in his pocket. Me, I¿m just rocking



This is more like it! The daddies and I are spending August in sunny St Tropez. So it¿s goodbye to boots and raincoats and time to break out the shorts. Don¿t tell the old fellas, but I think I¿ve got the best bod, don¿t you?



Feeding time at the zoo in Georgia: I hope Daddy Elton changes out of that tracksuit before someone takes a photo. Oh, too late
