'Politicians are s***heads and backstabbers,' says Bond star Daniel Craig

He branded the Kardashians 'f***ing idiots' recently and now the razor tongue of James Bond star Daniel Craig has lashed at politicians.

In a new interview in the December-January issue of Men’s Journal he starts with the former British prime minister Tony Blair – a man who would have been 007’s boss.

Craig, 43, now starring in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' said politicians too often try to cosy up to celebrities hoping to be seen as cool.

New role: Craig is earning rave reviews for his foray away from Bond in the adaptation of the Stieg Larrson novel

'Tony Blair started it much more than anybody’s ever done, Craig said.

Referring to a 1936 German novel about an actor who curries favour with the Nazis to promote his career, and the 1981 movie based on it, he said: 'It becomes Mephisto.'

'You immediately are aligning yourself with a political party. Politicians are sh*theads,' Craig asserted.

'That's how they become politicians, even the good ones. We're actors, we're artists, we're very nice to each other. They'll turn around and stab you in the f*cking back.'

Other roles: Private Craig with his wife Rachel Weisz as they arrive in New Jersey in August, and as Bond

Talking about Blair's 1997 'Cool Brittannia' movement that saw artists like Oasis singer Noel Gallagher have tea at Downing Street, he saidL: 'The fact that a guy who'd been in a band, owned an electric guitar and has probably had a spliff was Prime Minister really meant something, after years of John Major and Margaret Thatcher.

'He just might be one of us,' he told one interviewer, 'In hindsight, it turned out he was just a politician like all the rest.'

Born in Chester in the north-west of England to an art teacher and a pub owner, Craig was raised in Liverpool and reared to vote for Labour Party candidates.

But came to view Mr. Blair’s middle ground 'New Labour' as 'the Tories dressed in red.'

He did some kind words for George Clooney and his political voice.

He said: 'George has his finger on the political pulse, and he's one of those guys who can get up and talk, and I don't have that.'

'If someone shoves a microphone in your face and says, 'Explain yourself,' you have to have a 100 percent understanding of why you're doing it, and unless you're 100 percent, don't f*cking do it, leave it alone, let your work speak for itself.'

Craig’s next Bond film, Skyfall, with Judi Dench as his superior, M, is scheduled for release in the fall of 2012.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is in theatres now.
